Be sure to tune into Discovery Channel tonight as Mike Rowe stars in an all-new episode of Dirty Jobs. In this episode, host Mike Rowe travels to northern California to apprentice on two very dirty jobs — harvesting walnuts and making goose down pillows and comforters. First, the walnuts are knocked from the trees with a shaker, swept into rows with a sweeper and collected by the harvester. At the workshop, Mike helps tidy things up by shoveling fermenting organic matter from the floor and machines, and then drains and rinses the float tank used to clean dirt, small stones, leaves and other debris from the nuts. He then checks on the walnuts in the drying room — the last step before they get loaded onto trucks for transport to the grocery store.

Mike then journeys to Tulelake at the northern-most tip of California to investigate what goes into making goose down pillows and comforters. The process begins with the collection of geese and ducks from hunters, then moves to a picking machine, where feathers and down are plucked. To see where all the plucked feathers end up, Mike follows the machine to the feather room, where he then ventures to a gutting table to help finish processing the birds. Finally, Mike visits the stuffing room where he uses a special vacuum to fill pillows with the cleaned feathers and down. In the finishing touch, he sews the freshly stuffed pillows closed and bags them for shipping.

Be sure to tune into Discovery Channel tonight as Mike Rowe kicks off a fifth season of Dirty Jobs. Host Mike Rowe takes a trip to Palmyra, Pennsylvania to visit a bologna factory, where he learns what it takes to become the world’s largest producer of smokehouse bologna. Mike starts out his day at the fat removal station, cutting the excess fat and clots out of the meat before sending it into the grinder. He loads the ground meat into the mixer and adds the seasonings before transporting, hanging and slicing the meat in the smokehouse. But before this job comes to an end, he learns the importance of proper disposal practices, as he cleans out the filters in the factory’s water system to prevent any excess meat from traveling into the city’s water treatment systems.

From there, Mike heads to Alaska to find the truth behind the legend of a very special toilet – one that burns its own contents. He discovers that the burning toilet not only exists but it is also in need of fixing. Mike starts out by removing the unburned remains from the toilet before taking it completely apart, repairing it and scrubbing it all clean.
